The statue recalls the history of the Branbergen biscuit factory that was located in Musselkanaal. Bruintje Beer has been associated with the history of Musselkanaal since 1920. The Branbergen biscuit factory used to be located here. Branbergen produced biscuits with the effigy of Rupert Bear. As a product name, the cartoon hero Rupert Bear was linked to the promotion of Branbergen's products.
Rupert Bear (Rupert). Main character in the series of comic strips by Mary Tourtel, which appeared from 8 November 1920 in the British daily Daily Express. Bruintje Beer (Dutch translation of Rupert) spent his entire life dressed in a jumper, checked trousers and ditto scarf. In 1935, Alfred Bestall took over drawing the series and he was succeeded by John Harrold in 1973.
